Transported
Transported was a set of sound installations in different sites in Middlesbrough train station, focusing on the inter-connections between people and place. As Artist in Residence for the 'Most Creative Station' Programme, I involved station staff, local creatives, rail interest groups, and the travelling public in recording stories, messages and soundscapes. New audio pieces composed from these recordings were added throughout the residency.
All passengers were also invited to leave a message for other travellers using a Freephone number.
Transported responded to the rhythms of rail travel: the 'empty' waiting time became an invitation to listen and transform the traveller's experience of the station by connecting with its hidden stories, personal messages and meanings. A highlight of the residency was getting to know the station staff and listen to their perspectives on the place, the town and beyond.
The sound pieces could be heard through movement activated ultrasonic speakers on Platform 1 & 2, headphones in the Platform 1 Waiting Room, and the Freephone numbers. Golden ears and floor graphics indicated the location of the works.
Transported was commissioned for Middlesbrough's Most Creative Station - a project delivered by Navigator North as members of Middlesbrough Cultural Partnership, and supported through The Cultural Development Fund, a Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) fund administered by Arts Council England..
