Soil Circles

The beginning of my landscape music 2011 - 15

These pieces are the traces of intimate interventions in the natural environment, a record of solitary performances - a bit 'feral', ritualized, but ambiguous as to their source and purpose.

Soil Circles represent a repetitive process enacted freshly in response to specific times and places.

I find a stone, a particular place to be and circle the stone in the soil.  The pebbles already embedded in the soil create a rhythm as my stone passes them on each circling; the sound shifts gradually as the circling creates a deeper and deeper furrow.  Once the circling task is begun, it creates its own momentum…it is as if I am ‘at work’.
